Partners for Law in Development [PLD] announces an unpaid internship for law students with research interests in human rights law in relation to violence against women.
ABOUT THE ORGANISATION:
PLD is resource group on working for the advancement of women’s rights and social justice through the law. Our approach to human rights draws strongly upon indivisibility of civil, political with the economic, social and cultural rights with women’s rights as a central area of concern. Our work on women’s rights relates to the intersecting fields of sexuality, culture, family and violence against women. We have played a key role in the current law reform initiatives in respect of sexual violence. We are a leading resource group on CEDAW in the country. Based in Delhi, our work combines community level interventions, advocacy, human rights monitoring and accountability, capacity development, and production of knowledge resources. JOB DESCRIPTION:
The internship will involve legal research on international, domestic and select comparative law. We are looking at two areas in respect of violence against women currently – one in relation to targeting of women as ‘witches’ and the second, in respect of sexual violence. The former project involves collation and analysis of field data relating to witch hunting; the latter requires research in respect of various aspects of sexual violence – judicial reasoning, reparations/ compensation schemes, sentencing and substantive offences. Additionally, we are looking to develop an archive on feminist legal activism in India. The internship affords opportunities to participate in campaigns that PLD supports, participation in organizational meetings, coordinating consultations and working with the feedback. The placement will afford opportunities to learn about activism in India. Field work will not be required.
IDEAL CANDITATE: A law student studying international law. A demonstrated interest in feminism, sexuality, cultural identity politics and violence against women and development will be an advantage.
